Why Is July 4th Celebrated in the United States?

July 4th is a very special date in the United States. Every year, millions of families gather to celebrate the nation's independence with fireworks, parades, outdoor meals, and plenty of joy. But do you really know why this important date is celebrated?

Independence Day: A Historic Moment

On July 4th, 1776, the leaders of the thirteen British colonies in North America signed the Declaration of Independence. This historic document announced that these colonies would no longer be part of the British Empire and would form a new nation: the United States of America.

The Declaration of Independence was written primarily by Thomas Jefferson and was signed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This brave act represented the American people's desire to govern themselves and have freedom.

Why Was Independence Necessary?

The British colonies in America wanted independence because:

  • The British government imposed very high taxes on them without giving them a voice in decisions.
  • They had no freedom to govern their own local affairs.
  • They wanted control over their own destiny as a people.

The famous motto of the time was: "No taxation without representation" — the colonists felt it was unfair to pay taxes to a government in which they had no representation.

How It's Celebrated Today

Today, Independence Day is a national celebration full of beautiful traditions that bring families together. Many people enjoy time off work, barbecues with friends and family, community parades, and spectacular fireworks at dusk.

In Oregon, especially here in the Hillsboro community, July 4th is a perfect day to get out with family, enjoy the beautiful summer weather, and create lasting memories together. Many families visit local parks, attend community events, and then head home craving something sweet and refreshing to end the day.

A Celebration of Freedom and Family

The most important thing about this date is that it represents freedom and opportunity. July 4th reminds us that we live in a country where we have the freedom to choose, to work on what we're passionate about, and to build the future we want for our families.

It's a good time to teach our children about our country's history, explain what independence means, and help them understand that freedom is a gift we must cherish.
